In early project meetings, we set out to develop a shared vision: priorities for climate action in our region, ways of working, events to run, knowledge to gain, and stakeholders to include.
We began with core members from CALL, One Westport, Mulranny, Newport, and our Climate Action Officers at Mayo County Council. It quickly became clear that a shared vision would emerge through activities and discussions rather than being defined upfront. So we started planning what to do.
Now, at the end of Phase 1, we’re ready to establish a public presence for ClewBACA and share the vision that’s taken shape.

On June 19th at the Westport Woods Hotel, members of CALL, One Westport, Mulranny Community Futures, and Newport Dark Skies met with Mayo County Council's Climate Action Officer Laura Dennehy to shape a shared vision for the Clew Bay Alliance. A productive evening with real progress made.

On July 24th, the Clew Bay Alliance met at Mulranny Community Futures Decarbonising Zone to refine their shared vision and plan next steps. Topics included sustainability, community engagement, and shared learning. The group also explored relationship-building and joint funding opportunities for greater impact across Clew Bay.

On October 15th we met at the Westport Woods Hotel to see about confirming a list of events that Clew Bay Alliance funding would support. We agreed on three events one in Mulranny in November 2025, one in Westport in December 2025 in December and one in Louisburgh in April 2026.

The Westport event in early December featured "The Game" — a multiplayer card game set in 2030 that challenges players to make tough decisions around the Sustainable Development Goals. It was facilitated by Clew Bay Alliance member John Scahill, a lecturer at ATU.

We had a great time, and a good dinner as part of the meeting. We made some progress with setting a vision.

The Mulranny event took place in November on the subject of “FUTURE PROOFING MAYO COMMUNITIES”. The keynote speaker was Dr. Shane Timmons speaking on ‘The Psychology of Community Change’. Workshop topics included: Funding Opportunities, Community Bike Repair, Upcycling, Rapid Climate Action, Saltmarsh Stewardship.

The Westport Event took place in early December and was in the form of “The Game”. https://2030sdgsgame.com/. This is a multi-player card game which takes participants into a real world scenario in the year 2030. The game aims to inform players about the Sustainable Development Goals by asking them to make tough decisions about what projects to support, what people to help, and how honest to be. It was facilitated by one of the ClewBACA members, John Scahill who is also a lecturer in ATU.

The Woodlands Workshop (April 2026) is the final event for ClewBACA Phase 1. This takes place in Louisburgh in partnership with Hometree. This event brings together representatives from NPWS, Hometree, ACRES agricultural schemes, LAWPRO and other agencies, to discuss the next steps in creating an agenda to support tree planting in the west.

ClewBACA started out as a collaboration between CALL, the lead organisation and One Westport. Representatives from each of these organisations met to discuss the potential of magnifying the impact of activities by working together. At the same time, each organisation has specific interests and particular localities and so it was agreed that it is important to maintain autonomy, but gain the benefits from a strength in numbers approach. Mulranny Decarbonising Zone Project quickly came on board alongside Newport (Dark Skies Project). We are grateful to Community Foundation Ireland for funding this initiative (Phase 1 2025/6)
